BUS 101: Introduction to Business

Business 101: Introduction to Business can now be taken online or in the classroom from the KU School of Business.

Course description

This course is designed for prospective business students who wish to learn more about professional opportunities for business majors. Course topics include an overview of each functional area of business, its role in the organization, and career opportunities for the following business majors: accounting, business administration, finance, management and leadership, marketing, information systems, and supply chain management.

The course will also address professional development topics, such as résumés, internships, study abroad, ethics and social responsibility. Students will be introduced to School of Business faculty, curricula requirements, and career services. Guest lecturers from area industries will also contribute to the course. Student participation in campus/community activities may be required.

The primary objectives of the course are to:

  1. Acquire a working knowledge of each functional area of business.
  2. Learn about the business majors available at KU and explore career opportunities associated with each major.
  3. Develop and exhibit résumé-writing skills.
  4. Conduct a self-analysis and identify post-graduate career goals.
  5. Develop a Career Management Action Plan to facilitate the achievement of educational & professional goals.
  6. Learn about experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, job shadowing, study abroad programs, and student organizations.
  7. Understand the importance of networking, business etiquette, and effective communication.
  8. Realize the role of ethics and social responsibility in business.
