Event provides students a free wardrobe makeover

LAWRENCE — Students at the University of Kansas who are looking ahead at graduation, interviewing for jobs or internships can update their wardrobe to be more professional without limiting self-expression or breaking the bank.

Remember that time you accidentally spilled your coffee down the front of your only nice, dress shirt? Remember that time your pant legs didn't reach the top of your shoes? Remember when you didn't know what the term "business professional attire" meant?

The KU Style Project is a new event on campus Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom hosted by Taylor Jacobson, former Rachel Zoe stylist.

There will be five contestants who will update their wardrobe with the help of five campus stylists who have mastered the art of style as a reflection of the self, using a $175 budget from Student Union Activities.

"Even if you're not being deliberate, you're expressing yourself through your clothing choices, for better or worse," said Bea Kilat, cultural arts coordinator of Student Union Activities.

So if you found yourself uneasy during the Career Fair this week, or aren't sure what to wear to your next interview, the KU Style Project is here to help.

"We want to help students going through lifestyle changes," Kilat said. "It's for students who are applying for professional internships and jobs, or who maybe have never had a chance to update their wardrobe to reflect the fact that they're now a 20-something and not a teenager."

Whether or not you are ready for it, you are approaching the age when KU shirts are only appropriate for special occasions, and slacks, dress shirts and ties will become your wardrobe.

"This event seems like a great start to getting advice on dressing professionally," said Jolene Phillips, assistant director of the School of Business Career Services Center. "There are so many options available that students often struggle to find proper professional clothing."

The event will be a great resource for some free advice on how to dress for your career.
