School of Business distinguished alumnus passes away

Jim Martin
LAWRENCE ― James (Jim) L. Martin, 81, passed away on January 10, 2012. Martin graduated from the University of Kansas in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. In 1997 Martin returned to KU to chair the School of Business' Accounting Accreditation Committee. The committee helped gain accreditation for the accounting program from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Martin was honored in 2010 by the School of Business when he was named a distinguished alumnus.
"Jim has long been a friend of the University of Kansas School of Business. His valuable support, advice and effort will be missed by our faculty and staff," said Dean Neeli Bendapudi. "We are saddened at his passing and express our condolences to Jim's family."
Martin, an Air Force veteran, enjoyed a successful career starting when he joined Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. In 1955, he joined the Kansas City Office of Baird, Kurtz and Dobson (BKD) and became managing partner in 1974. He served as BKD representative to The American Group and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Advisory Committee. Martin served as treasurer of the St. Paul's Episcopal Day School Board of Trustees, president of the University Club and was a member of the Rotary Club. Martin also served on the Board of Directors of Blish Mize in Atchison, Kan., and Metro Park Warehouse in Kansas City after he retired in 1994. Condolences may be offered to www.mtmoriah-freeman.com.
