KU students honored as 2011 Business Minor Scholars

LAWRENCE ― This month 29 undergraduates pursuing majors throughout the University of Kansas were honored as 2011 Business Minor Scholars. Each scholar has completed at least nine hours of coursework in the business minor program with a 4.0 GPA and is currently a full-time student.

The students received a one-time award of $250 for each completed course. In total, the School of Business awarded more than $26,000 to its 2011 Business Minor Scholars. Many of these students are working toward undergraduate degrees in the schools of pharmacy, engineering, journalism and architecture.

"KU students are competing in a competitive employment market and the business minor can help them standout to potential employers," said Jason O'Connor, assistant dean of academic programs. "Business affects everyone and these students want a competitive edge in life."

Scholarship recipients were honored at an Oct. 20th business minor luncheon with O'Connor; Doug Houston, associate dean of academic affairs; and Frank Marshall, assistant dean for development support.

"Core business skills are essential to any undergraduate education," said Neeli Bendapudi, dean of the School of Business. "Whether you become an engineer, a journalist or a scientist, every member of the workforce will be a part of a business environment. Our business minor program gives students the tools to thrive in any profession."

Established in 2006, the business minor program provides non-business majors with 18 credit hours of coursework in accounting, information systems, management, marketing, finance and decision sciences. To date, the business minor program has graduated 1,500 students and currently holds 811 undergraduate students.
