Every year the University of Kansas School of Business honors outstanding students with the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Award.  Douglas May, co-director of the International Center for Ethics in Business, created the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Award in 2006.

The seven principles of the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. code stand for responsibility, enthusiasm, self-esteem, professional integrity, equity, compassion and teamwork.

“The Award began as a way to recognize students who live up to the principles embodied in the positive code of conduct for the School of Business,” May said.

This year’s crop of recipients included three accounting majors: Adam Casady, David Cohen and Katie Cox, finance major: Lynn Bammal, MBA student Douglas Matthias and Ph.D. student Juan Mao.

The winners were announced at the Sutton Lecture in February.  Professor May only had kind words to say about the recipients, highlighting their inspiring work ethic and their contagious enthusiasm. Each student expressed their feelings of gratitude.

“It is a great honor to be a recipient of the RESPECT award. I take pride knowing that my hard work, values, and behavior have not gone unnoticed. Although only six students received the award, the KU School of Business is full of students equally as worthy as I am.” Casady said.

Students were nominated by faculty, staff and students.  Award winners are chosen by the Honor Council in the School of Business.

“To be recognized for this award is a great pat on the back from people that I truly admire for something that is not always easy,” Cohen said.

Awards are supported by funds from the Marjorie McNish Fund for Ethics in Business.
