School of Business

Monday, December 6, 2010

The University of Kansas School of Business will offer Business 101: Business Majors, Careers and Professional Skills online this spring for the first time since the class was first offered in spring 2008. The three credit hour class will run semester-long in conjunction with KU Continuing Education.

“This new online offering will give distance students the chance to take an important and popular business school class,” said Lisa Leroux-Smith, class instructor and School of Business lecturer. “Business 101 is open to students from community colleges, high school students and KU students living outside Lawrence.  If space allows, KU Lawrence campus students will also have the opportunity to enroll in the course.”

The online course will focus on helping students decide their career path by looking at all of the majors offered in the School of Business. Students will take an assessment that organizes their interests, values and abilities into careers in the business world as well as conduct research on recommended careers.

“Business 101 gives students a stronger sense of what they want to do in the business world. It will also focus on resume-building and professional skill development,” Leroux-Smith said.

Students enrolled in the online course will have access to lectures from faculty members and business professionals in each area of the School of Business, giving them a broad introduction to each area.
“The class will help students narrow their career focus so they don’t waste time academically,” Leroux-Smith said.
