Conference to focus on government deficits and sovereign default
Monday, September 27, 2010
“Sovereign Default: Prevention, Prediction and Consequences,” a conference on foreign fiscal aide, will be offered by the KU School of Business, according to finance professor George Bittlingmayer. The conference will be held Friday, Oct. 1 at the Adams Alumni Center. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
The conference will cover various foreign countries’ current involvement in the financial crisis with insights from leading financial experts, including Boston University professor Laurence Kotlikoff and the Kauffman Foundation’s Robert Litan.
“Many governments are on the verge of default as a result of past deficits, dysfunctional politics and the worldwide recession,” said Bittlingmayer, conference coordinator and School of Business finance professor. “Outright default and often the mere possibility of default generate uncertainty and spillover effects. It’s not a pretty picture, as the case of Greece and some other countries illustrates.”
Other conference speakers include Anand S. Iyer, Morgan Stanley Capital International; Marie Cavanaugh, Standard & Poors; and a panel discussion with Steven Koenig, JP Morgan Chase; Atish Ghosh, IMF; and Antonio Velandia-Rubiano, World Bank.
Funding for the conference is provided by KU’s Center for International Business Education and Research.
