Every year, KU School of Business students participate in internships in a variety of industries at locations all over the world. Internships offer many benefits to students, such as a taste of the real world or a test run with a company or industry that they are interested in working for after graduation. However, no matter what the reasons are for getting an internship, they can all be sure that the experience will greatly enhance their resumes and their employment chances down the line. A study released in October 2009 by the National Association for Colleges & Employers found that students that had participated in an internship during college had a distinct advantage in obtaining a job offer at the time of graduation compared to those students that did not have an internship. Such advantages are critical during periods of reduced entry-level hiring, like we are seeing in today's job market.
The Business Career Services Center (BCSC) puts a good amount of effort into finding internship opportunities for business students and promoting their experiences. To increase awareness about internships, in fall 2009, the BCSC and the Dean's Office held an internship contest. Students created a brief presentation about their internship experience. We had 23 students participate in the contest. Presentations were judged by staff, faculty, and regional employers. They judged the contestants on their creativity, experience and delivery. The three winners each won a $500 cash prize. However, all participants had their presentations posted throughout the School of Business to increase awareness about internships and the impact they have on students.
This endeavor was a great success and will surely become an annual contest. Therefore, we encourage your student to start searching for internships now if they haven't started already, and then to be on the lookout for this contest in fall 2010. Students should have spring 2010 career fairs (listed below) on their calendars if they are still looking for full-time positions of internship.
