Todd Crawford, finance senior, was sitting in his Intermediate Accounting for Finance class when Marlesa Roney, vice provost for Student Success, and Ann Eversole, assistant vice provost for Student Success, walked into the classroom and called Crawford to the front.

They read off accomplishments of Crawford's, who is also pre-med, before presenting him with a Chancellor's Student Award called the Agnes Wright Strickland Award.

"I wasn't sure what was going on initially, and being called to the front was fairly embarrassing," Crawford said. "But it's a tremendous honor to be receiving, especially this one."

Crawford is one of 10 seniors who received a Chancellor's Award. They will be honored at a reception on May 16 and will also be among those on the platform with Chancellor Robert Hemenway during Commencement May 17 in Memorial Stadium. Their portraits will also be in the program.

Crawford's specific award goes to graduating seniors in recognition of their academic records, demonstrated leadership in matters of university concern, respect among fellow students and indications of future dedication to service in the university.

"Todd's academic record, leadership and volunteer activities are a perfect match for the Strickland Award," Eversole said.

Mark Haug, School of Business Teaching Fellow, for whom Crawford worked as a teaching assistant said that out of the thousands of students he had worked with, Crawford would be in the top one percent regarding his level of maturity, professionalism and courtesy.

"He's got all of them," Haug said. "As a leader, he has that natural gift and so much of it is his personality. He is just a humble, gifted kid who hasn't let it go to his head."

Crawford's award also comes with a lifetime membership to the KU Alumni Association.
