Entrepreneurship Students mentor local high school students

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

KU School of Business students in the Entrepreneurship in Practice class are giving back to the Lawrence community by mentoring Lawrence High School (LHS) students.

The LHS students are members of Young Entrepreneurs of Kansas (YEK). The KU students in the class, which is the undergraduate entrepreneurship capstone, are helping the YEK students with their business plans for start ups of new businesses. They will then compete for prizes awarded in May at Washburn University. KU students will also receive awards for mentoring the students who win Most Viable Business Plan and Most Improved Business Plan.

"It's been a very enjoyable experience and the students are really interested in our input and revise their plans accordingly," Sam Weinstein, Overland Park senior, said.

The KU students meet bi-weekly with the YEK students to advise on key issues such as new venture financing options, growing a business on a small marketing budget, building a management team and how to compete in a crowded marketplace.

"It's been great sharing our knowledge from the KU Business School and Entrepreneurial classes. It makes me realize just how much I have learned," Clint Brown, Cincinnati, Ohio senior, said.

Jack Hodes, Kansas City, Missouri junior, had a second objective in mind when he enrolled in Entrepreneurship in Practice. He is utilizing this class and project to earn his KU Certification in Service Learning.

Entrepreneurship in Practice (ENTR 490) is the final course of a multi-course sequence in which undergraduate students at KU learn how to start, grow and successfully exit a new business and earn a Concentration in Entrepreneurship degree from KU.
