The KU School of Business and Law School will be offering free tax services for those who qualify Feb. 16 through April 15.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program prepares returns for taxpayers who are Kansas, Missouri or Illinois residents making less than $42,000 per year and not itemizing deductions. Last year, students prepared approximately 500 tax returns.

Geri Hartley, law student and MBA student, is organizing the program this year. Hartley attended several training sessions in Topeka in January, and has been recruiting site coordinators and volunteers for several weeks to help with the program.

"I was involved in preparing returns last year and enjoyed meeting people and helping them," Hartley said. "This year, I wanted to take an active role in managing the people who are volunteering in addition to helping with the tax preparation."

The program operates on a first-come first-serve basis. For specific information on the program, call (785) 864-9227. Click hereto downloada PDF version of the VITA schedule.
