Former Governor Bill Graves to deliver lecture on transportation
Tuesday, February 3, 2009
LAWRENCE - Bill Graves, President and CEO of American Trucking Associations and former Governor of Kansas, will speak at the University of Kansas on Thursday, Feb. 26. His lecture will focus on how the transportation of goods will be affected by the economy.
Graves' lecture, focused on "transportation at the crossroads," is part of the KU School of Business' Anderson Chandler Lecture Series. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center and is free to the public. Tickets are not required.
American Trucking Associations (ATA) is the national trade and safety organization of the United States trucking industry that represents motor carriers before all branches of the government. Under the leadership of Graves, the ATA is advancing several safety initiatives. ATA has proposed requiring that all new heavy trucks be equipped with speed limiters and supports a government proposal to test the use of onboard recorders.
Graves served as Governor of Kansas for two terms from 1995 until 2003. Under his administration, Kansas taxpayers saw the largest tax cut in state history. In 1999 he signed an historic 10-year, $13 billion comprehensive transportation program into law, improving highways, railroad infrastructure, airports and public transit service in Kansas.
The Anderson Chandler Lecture Series is offered each year by the KU School of Business. It began in 1997 and is made possible by School of Business alumnus Anderson Chandler.
Mr. Chandler is CEO, president and director of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co. of Topeka and vice president and director of First Bank of Newton. He has remained avidly involved at the University and the School of Business.
