ÔWorld's most powerful woman' discusses career with KU Business faculty, MBA students

Thursday, December 11, 2008

Cynthia Carroll, the first woman CEO of Anglo American, one of the world's largest independent mining companies, met with business students and faculty on Nov. 14. Carroll, a KU alumna, visited the University to deliver a public lecture for the Hall Center for the Humanities.

During her informal meeting with MBA students and faculty, Carroll discussed the progress of her career from studying geology at KU to entering the mining industry and working up the ranks to lead a multi-national company.

When asked for her advice to current students, Carroll stressed the importance of international business experience and flexibility. She encouraged MBA students to look at opportunities that present themselves in their careers, even if they follow a different path than they had planned.

Carroll received a master's in geology from KU in 1982 and a master's of business administration from Harvard. As the CEO of Anglo American, Fortune Magazine recently named Carroll the "world's most powerful woman."
