For School of Business students, the first day of fall classes was brightened by the inaugural Business Career Services Center (BCSC) Career Carnival. Over a hundred students stopped by the carnival, set up in Summerfield Hall, to enjoy snow-cones, cotton candy and the popular video game Guitar Hero. An information booth manned by BCSC staff gave students a chance to learn about the center in a lighthearted atmosphere.

Jennifer Jordan, director of the BCSC, felt that the event was an effective way to reach out to students at the top of the school year. "The Career Kick-Off Carnival was a fun way to welcome students back to campus while also promoting the various services, resources, and programs offered through the Business Career Services Center." Jordan said. "The fall recruiting season is such an important time, and our staff hoped that having a strong presence on the first day of classes would be a great way to make sure that students would remember to prioritize their career plans as they move into the fall semester."

The BCSC helps students find career-building internships by maintaining strong relationships with companies that recruit from KU and by hosting workshops that build job-hunting skills. Throughout the 2008-2009 academic year, students will have the chance to perfect their resume or participate in mock-interviews with business employers. The carnival gave BCSC staff the opportunity to connect with business students in a casual atmosphere and raise their awareness of these resources.

"The BCSC really wanted to welcome our Business students back to class with a fun environment, while also making sure they knew what Career-prep programming we would be offering this semester," said David Byrd-Stadler, Employer Relations Coordinator "I definitely think we were able to do both. And not only did the students love the snow-cones and cotton candy we handed out, we found out that the video game Guitar Hero would pack people into the Koch Commons!"
