School of Business center holds meeting to develop internet programs for auditing

Thursday, September 4, 2008

The School of Business Ernst & Young Center for Auditing Research and Advanced Technology (E&Y CARAT) is currently hosting a meeting to discuss revolutionary, web-based technologies that would integrate Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions for audit judgments and could have a lasting effect on how audits are performed. Attendees include experts in the auditing field such as Dr. Hans P. J. Verkruijsse, PhD, Partner, Ernst & Young LLP, The Netherlands; and Dr. Philip I. Elsas, PhD in Mathematics and Computing Science on Financial Auditing and founder and director of ComputationalAuditing.com. The meeting is taking place from September 1-5, on the KU Lawrence campus. Attendees will present a report of their discussions to School of Business faculty at a workshop held on Friday afternoon.

Rajendra Srivastava, School of Business Ernst & Young Professor and Director of E&Y CARAT, was instrumental in organizing the meeting. Srivastava is known around the world for his work on applications of Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions for audit decisions. Also, he is well-versed in the development of online technology, having collaborated on the development of FRAANK (Financial Reporting and Auditing Agent with Net Knowledge), a program that accesses and analyzes the financial reports of publicly traded companies. He is confident that the meeting will provide those in attendance with a platform to discuss their ideas regarding online technology and how it can enhance the manner in which audits are performed. "The main objective of a week-long meeting is to identify design and development of technology for improving efficiency and effectiveness of the audit process using modern Internet options," said Srivastava.

E&Y CARAT is dedicated to improving the auditing process through research and technological advances. For more information about E&Y CARAT, visit http://www.eycarat.ku.edu/
