Chairman of the FDIC to speak at KU

Sheila Bair, Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) will present the University of Kansas School of Business' 2007 Fall Chandler Lecture on Monday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lied Center

Bair will address timely financial topics including sub-prime mortgages, pay-day loans and the financial literacy of saving, spending and not wasting money. The lecture is free and the public is invited. Tickets are not required.

The School of Business will also host Bair at a round-table discussion with area bankers and in classroom sessions with small groups of business students.

Sheila Bair is a native of Independence, Kansas, and earned a bachelor's in philosophy in 1975 and a law degree in 1978, both from KU. Bair was sworn in as Chairman of the FDIC, in June 2006, having previously served on the organization's Advisory Committee on Banking Policy. During that time, she also served on the faculty for the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Prior to that, Bair held numerous positions including: Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Senior Vice President for Government Relations of the NYSE Stock Exchange and Counsel to Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole.

In late 2006, Bair was named to SmartMoney Magazine's "Power 30" list of the 30 most influential people in investing.

Bair will be the 11th lecturer for the Anderson Chandler Lecture Series, which began in 1997. The lecture series is made possible by Anderson Chandler, an alumnus of the KU School of Business. Chandler is CEO, President, and Director of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co. of Topeka and Vice President and Director of First Bank of Newton. Chandler serves on the School of Business Board of Advisors, in addition to supporting numerous other initiatives throughout The University of Kansas and the School.

Previous Chandler Lecturers include Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company; Matthew Rose, CEO of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation; Michael Powell, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission; and syndicated columnists David Broder and Robert Novak.
