Real-World Learning
Access to real-world learning opportunities is a significant component of the MAcc program. Students are highly encouraged to apply their understanding of business theory through experiential learning opportunities.
Business Consulting
Student teams serve as independent consultants assigned to address current issues within a major Kansas City-area business. These consulting teams interact with high level executives to analyze and recommend solutions and implementation strategies for their clients.
Fraud and Forensic Accounting Course
Inspired from national corporate scandals throughout the country, this course provides an overview of the various techniques used to solve these crimes. Students study issues including inventory theft, cash larceny techniques, payroll schemes, financial statement fraud, interviewing skills and interrogation, money laundering, and identity theft. Many then choose to continue their experience with a student membership in the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).
Information Security Course
In this interactive course, students learn how companies can put themselves at risk by not understanding their electronic liabilities. Going beyond information security theory, this course provides solid security measures that can be used by anyone. The course also deals with vulnerabilities in operating systems, application security, network and telecom security, digital signatures and viruses.
Italy Campus
Jayhawks on the Job
This Kansas City-based program allows students to “shadow” a business professional during the course of a workday afternoon. Jayhawks on the Job provides students with a focused experience that enhances their understanding of a particular field and the business world. It is also a great opportunity to network with local business professionals.
Internships
Students are also strongly encouraged to complete an internship in accounting during their course of study. Especially valuable for those students entering the program with limited business experience, an internship is a great opportunity to apply skills learned throughout the program. Internships often provide students with differentiating advantages in the recruiting process and may even lead to full-time job offers upon graduation.
Xplore
The Xplore program provides opportunities to explore career paths outside the Kansas City area. Over fall break, the KU School of Business sponsors a group of selected accounting students to meet with firms and alumni over a fast-paced, action-packed, three-day visit to locations such as New York City, Chicago, Denver and Dallas.
